What to Do in Los Angeles: 115 Free, Quirky & Tasty Spots
Researched guide: Armen hasn't filmed here yet
Get to Griffith Observatory an hour before sunset and watch the lights come on across the basin, block by block, until the grid runs out of sight. Then you'll see the real puzzle of Los Angeles: it's huge. LA County holds 88 separate cities, and the places worth your time are scattered from the Malibu bluffs to the San Gabriel foothills. So this guide is built for picking one part of town and going deep. It covers 115 places, from the Getty Center's travertine hilltop and the century-old Santa Monica Pier to 17 hand-built towers of steel, mortar and broken glass in Watts, and a Culver City museum that leaves you unsure what was real. 59 of them cost nothing to walk into. 24 are places to eat, long-running local favorites, including the downtown deli that says it invented the French dip in 1918. Every spot comes with a typical visit length and a pin on the map.
Last checked: October 21, 2026 for spots that show a date. Other visit lengths are typical estimates, not a live hours listing. Check prices and hours before you go.
Best Things to Do in Los Angeles
Start with the classics, because most of them cost nothing to enter.
- Griffith Observatory is free inside, with space exhibits, a Tesla coil and public telescopes on clear nights. Only the planetarium shows charge. It's closed Mondays, and the parking lot fills fast at sunset, so walk up from Fern Dell or take the DASH bus.
- The Getty Center gets you up its hill on a driverless tram. Entry is free with a timed reservation, Van Gogh's Irises hangs inside, and the gardens look out to the ocean. Parking is $25, less later in the day. Check before you go.
- Santa Monica Pier carries the sign for the symbolic end of Route 66, a 1920s carousel and a solar-powered Ferris wheel. Walk it at dusk.
- Then go see Watts Towers: Simon Rodia spent 33 years building 17 spires by hand, with no blueprints. The grounds are free, and a guided tour gets you inside the fence.

One man, Simon Rodia, spent 33 years building these 17 spires out of steel, mortar, broken bottles and seashells, all by hand and with no blueprints. Standing under them feels like visiting a cathedral made of junk. You can admire the spires from the sidewalk at no cost, but the only way inside the fence is a 30-minute guided tour ($12, free for ages 17 and under, cash or check) on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Where to Stay & When to Go
Stay where you'll spend most of your days, because crossing town costs time.
- Downtown puts you on the Metro hub.
- Hollywood and Los Feliz sit close to Griffith Park.
- Santa Monica and Venice trade some convenience for the beach and the E Line.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons. May and June often bring gray marine-layer mornings near the coast, and late summer can be hot inland. Fall is peak wildfire season, when Santa Ana winds raise the risk, so check trail and park closures before any hike.
Los Angeles Itinerary: 3 Days by Neighborhood
- Day 1, Downtown: Union Station → Olvera Street and Avila Adobe (built 1818) → lunch at Philippe's or Grand Central Market → Angels Flight → Bradbury Building → The Last Bookstore → Central Library.
- Day 2, Hollywood and Griffith Park: Hollywood Forever Cemetery → Hollyhock House grounds → Bronson Caves → Griffith Observatory for sunset.
- Day 3, Westside: Getty Center in the morning → Museum of Jurassic Technology → Venice Canals and the Binoculars Building → Santa Monica Pier at dusk.
Check opening days first: several museums close one weekday.

Los Angeles FAQ
How long should a first trip to Los Angeles be?
Three to four days covers Downtown, Hollywood and Griffith Park, and the Westside without rushing. Give each day one part of town. The distances are real, and crossing the county at rush hour can eat an afternoon.
What are the best free things to do in Los Angeles?
59 of the 115 places here are free. Some of the best:
- Griffith Observatory (free inside, closed Mondays)
- the Getty Center and Getty Villa (both free with a timed reservation; the Villa is closed Tuesdays; parking is paid at both)
- the Bradbury Building lobby, Union Station and the Central Library
- the Venice Canals and Santa Monica Pier
Hours change, so check before you go.
Can you hike to Echo Mountain and the Mount Lowe Railway ruins right now?
No. The trails are inside the Eaton Fire closure area. An Angeles National Forest order closes the Sam Merrill, Echo Mountain and Mount Lowe trails through December 31, 2027. Check the forest's alerts page for updates.
What food is Los Angeles known for?
Its food is built on its communities, from tacos and Oaxacan moles to Koreatown barbecue. It also has old institutions with real staying power:
- Philippe The Original, which claims the French dip (1918)
- Langer's hot pastrami
- Musso & Frank (1919)
- Grand Central Market (1917)
Do you need a car in Los Angeles?
It helps, but it isn't required for a focused trip. Metro rail links Downtown with Hollywood, Pasadena, Long Beach and Santa Monica. Many downtown sights, like Union Station, Olvera Street, Grand Central Market and Angels Flight, are walkable from one another.
What's the best month to visit Los Angeles?
Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons. Expect gray coastal mornings in May and June, and heat inland in late summer. In fall, wildfire risk can close trails and parks, so check before you go.
